Target Retail Store - San Diego, California

Project Background

Compaction Grouting Project - Target StoreThe challenge for this project was to mitigate liquefaction potential of foundation soils with compaction grouting methods in an existing retail facility, while meeting project critical path schedule requirements.  The original Montgomery Wards facility was constructed in the 1960's in an area of San Diego, California known as Mission Valley.  Site conditions involving local deep Holocene alluvium and relatively high groundwater posed a significant liquefaction risk.  Compaction grouting was selected as the most cost effective ground treatment alternative for soil improvement, due to the inherent capability of working in and around the existing structure without the need for demolition and subsequent reconstruction.

Project Description

Standard Penetration / CPT Comparison of Grouted Alluvium

150,000 cubic feet (4,248 cubic meters) of low-slump grout was injected at approximately 2,800 locations throughout the 130,000 square foot (12,080 square meters) facility.  Over 31 miles (50 kilometers) of casing was installed with limited access equipment to accomplish this task.  Evaluation of soil improvement was provided with cone penetrometer (CPT) equipment, and significant improvement was realised.  This project required 4 to 6 crews working round-the-clock shifts, and was completed on time and within budget.
