Repair of a Hillside Debris Catchment Structure, Ventura County, California
Heavy seasonal rainfall had eventually compromised portions of a slope debris catchment structure at the toe of a steep hillside in Ventura County, California. The retaining structure was originally constructed during development of a residential tract, situated in a steep-walled canyon. The purpose of the structure was to mitigate slow downslope migration of loosened soils and talus. Inherent to this class of structure is the burden of periodic maintenance, including removal of debris collected behind the “freeboard” portion of the wall. Insufficient prior maintenance had hastened the original structure’s partial collapse, and portions of the structure needed to be rebuilt to restore functionality.
